SalMar InnovaNor takes action to strengthen its food safety culture

Leadership and culture are crucial for food safety. In february, 24 leaders from SalMar InnovaNor gathered for an in-house food safety culture course (the first of its kind in Norway). The course provided participants with a deeper understanding of how behavior and attitudes affect food safety in practice –and equipped them with practical tools to strengthen the culture in their daily work.

From rules to attitudes – a new approach to food safety

Many organizations focus on rules and procedures to ensure safe food, but at SalMar InnovaNor, the focus was on how leadership and communication can build a stronger food safety culture.

“The training course gave us a completely new understanding of how culture impacts food safety in practice. We gained both insights and concrete tools that we can use in our everyday work. It was a course that really engaged us! It focused on behavior and attitudes, not just rules, and I believe this will have great value for us moving forward.” - Irina Getmanova, Quality Manager at SalMar

Through interactive discussions and practical examples, participants gained insights into how small adjustments in daily communication and leadership can make it easier for employees to make the right choices.

Key insights from the course

The participants highlighted several key takeaways they plan to carry forward:

“We became more aware of how we talk about food safety and how this affects how employees understand and comply with the requirements. We also learned how we, as leaders, can make it easier for everyone to make the right choices. It was also useful to see how small changes in our daily communication can contribute to a stronger food safety culture.”

The course has already contributed to practical changes

Even shortly after the course, InnovaNor's leaders have begun to see positive effects:

“We have already started discussing how we can implement what we learned into our routines and leadership meetings. It has also created more reflection on how we handle challenges related to food safety in our daily work. In addition, the course has contributed to team-building across different departments in the organization and highlighted that cross-disciplinary collaboration is key to shared success and goal achievement.”

Rune Paulsen, acting factory manager, who did not participate in the course himself, has also noticed the engagement:

"Thank you for a well-executed course from your side — I’ve only received positive feedback regarding both the execution and the expertise from Aquatiq."

Aquatiq greatly appreciates the collaboration with SalMar and looks forward to following their continued work in strengthening the food safety culture within the organization!
