INTEROX® AG Bath 35 is a clear, colorless liquid which is a specially designed hydrogen peroxide grade, used in aseptic packaging process using bath technology. Bath technology e.g. in Tetra Pak aseptic packaging machines, where the packaging material, consisting of a paperboard / aluminium / plastic composite, is passed through a bath containing hydrogen peroxide (35% w/w) at a typical temperature of 70-85oC for a short residence time (seconds). The packaging material then passes over rollers and hot air dryers to remove residual hydrogen peroxide, before being formed into the typical brick-form, filled with beverage or food product and heat sealed. The hydrogen peroxide must be regularly renewed in the bath to maintain an effective disinfectant concentration. The intension of aseptic packaging is the filling of beverages or liquid foods such as soups into paperboard or plastic containers under aseptic conditions in order to conserve the shelf-life of the packaged products. Hydrogen peroxide’s density is slightly higher than that of water, but is miscible with water in all proportions. It decomposes exothermally to water and oxygen. The decomposition is naturally slow (<1% per year), but is accelerated by heat and decomposition catalysts, such as transition metals and their compounds, strong acids and strong alkalis.
