Mowi tests biodegradable hydraulic oil with Aquatiq

As part of ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability in aquaculture, Mowi is now testing biodegradable hydraulic oil in boat cranes at its Tennøya site. This initiative, supplied and monitored by Aquatiq, aims to reduce environmental risks while ensuring safe and efficient operations. With cranes holding up to 400 liters of oil, this shift represents a significant step toward more sustainable practices in the industry.

Reducing environmental impact in aquaculture

Hydraulic oil is essential for the operation of boat cranes, which play a crucial role in daily activities at aquaculture sites. However, traditional hydraulic oil poses an environmental risk in case of spills or leaks. By switching to a biodegradable alternative, Mowi is taking proactive steps to minimize its ecological footprint while maintaining the high standards of food safety and operational efficiency.

Preben Arnesen, Operations Manager at Mowi Tennøya, emphasizes the importance of this initiative:

"Our boat cranes are vital to our daily operations, and this transition allows us to reduce environmental risks without compromising performance. Sustainability is a key priority for Mowi, and this is another step in the right direction."

A safer and more sustainable workplace

Beyond environmental benefits, biodegradable hydraulic oil also enhances workplace safety. Mowi’s Technical Coordinator, Bjørn Johan Dragsnes, highlights how this change contributes to a healthier work environment:

"This oil not only reduces potential harm to the environment but also improves safety for our team. It’s an innovation that benefits both our people and the planet."

Proven success in the industry

This project builds on the successful use of biodegradable hydraulic oil by Eidsvaag Kran og Transportservice AS. The company has already implemented the oil in its operations and has seen positive results. Managing Director of Eidsvaag Kran og Transportservice shares his experience:

"Using this oil on our equipment has shown great results. Making the switch to biodegradable options is one of the simplest yet most impactful steps we can take towards sustainability."

Shaping a more sustainable future

With this trial, Mowi and Aquatiq continue to drive innovation in aquaculture, demonstrating that sustainable solutions can go hand in hand with operational excellence. By testing and implementing environmentally friendly alternatives, the industry can take meaningful steps toward a greener future.
