Clean biochips. Less downtime. Less plastic waste.

CleanChips takes biochips out of the bioreactor, cleans and disinfects them automatically in controlled batches, and returns them ready for use. Mobile, documented and delivered by Aquatiq.

Resetting a biofilter shouldn’t mean throwing away your biochips

Biochips are small plastic carriers where bacteria grow as a biofilm and treat the water in a RAS (recirculating aquaculture system). After a disease outbreak or a disruption, the biofilter has to be reset. Until now, that has meant one of two costly options:

  • Replace the biochips: new purchases, freight from Asia and used chips handled as special waste
  • Clean them in the reactor: large volumes of water and chemicals, with an uncertain effect
  • Either way: days or weeks of downtime

How CleanChips cleans your biochips

CleanChips is a fully automated washing unit, built on Aquatiq's experience with CIP (Clean-In-Place, automated cleaning of process equipment) and hygienic design.

  1. Extract. The biochips are taken from the bioreactor into a holding tank.
  2. Clean. Controlled mechanical and chemical action breaks down biofilm, organic matter and microorganisms.
  3. Disinfect. A second stage repeats the process. Meanwhile, you clean the reactor.
  4. Return. The biochips go back into the reactor, ready for use.

Sensors monitor concentration, contact time and effect in every batch.

Why clean instead of replace

  • Reuse for 20+ years. Biochips last as long as the facility itself.
  • No new chips, no special waste. Skip the purchase, the freight and the disposal.
  • A documented result. Every batch is monitored and documented.
  • Less downtime. The reactor and the biochips are cleaned at the same time.
  • A lower footprint. Less plastic waste, water and chemicals.
